The Kara Bum-dance

This is probably the last edition in my posts on Japanese music. Actually, this isn't about Japanese music, the band, Kara, is Korean, but they are incredibly popular here in Japan, and sing in both Japanese and Korean.

The bum-wiggle done in this song is known as the "kara dance" (or "kara dansu"), and I've had many home-room teachers attempt to make kids do it as "punishment" for losing at a game or getting an answer wrong. Some kids are incredibly enthusiastic (often the boys), although many, unsurprisingly, find it embarrassing. It has also been popular this past year for wedding performances (at a Japanese wedding reception, friends of the bride and groom are expected to put on a short performance).

Enjoy "Mr." by Kara
